Welcome to South Blooming Grove Fire District and Independence Fire Company

History

The South Blooming Grove Fire District & Independence Fire Company was formed in 1975. Running out of one house we protect a 17 square mile district consisting of 2,000 homes and businesses. Now serving the community for over 40 years, we have grown to be a department known for its experience and expertise. South Blooming Grove Fire Department was formed to better serve the residents of Blooming Grove. Before being formed, the area was originally covered by Washingtonville and Monroe Fire Districts. The distance for them to travel to get to South Blooming Grove was far enough that it sparked some residence to petition to establish a new fire company. After three years of meeting, petitions and hard work SBGFD was born, adopting areas from both departments totaling 17 square miles.

We presently run two engines, one ladder truck, one rescue, one brush truck, one fire police vehicle and three Chiefs vehicles, a far cry from the original apparatus that were donated or built by the members. One of the first pieces of apparatus was a 1950 Mac pumper purchased from the Village of Monroe for $375.00 and a 1955 truck from Suffern for $60.00. Yes they both needed a lot of work but the new membership pulled it all together.
